Where Telegram Fits for Business Messaging

Telegram provokes strong opinions and very little analysis. It is either dismissed as irrelevant or treated as essential, usually depending on where the person offering the opinion lives. Our guide to planning past WhatsApp treats it as a market question with a factual answer, which is more useful than either position.

Where it actually matters

Telegram's business relevance is concentrated. It is strong across parts of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, meaningful in Iran and several neighbouring markets, and it has a specific niche in crypto, trading and technical communities everywhere. In Germany, the Gulf states and most of Western Europe it is a minority channel for consumer business.

That does not make it irrelevant to you — it makes it a question about your customers rather than about the platform. If a meaningful share of your enquiries already arrive with a Telegram handle attached, the answer is different from the regional average.

How it differs for business use

  • No template approval and no 24-hour window in the WhatsApp sense, which makes outbound messaging far easier and correspondingly easier to abuse.
  • Bots are a first-class feature rather than an afterthought, with a richer interface than WhatsApp permits.
  • Usernames rather than phone numbers, so a customer can message you without revealing a number — good for privacy, harder for matching records.
  • Groups and channels are used far more heavily, and often as a primary business tool rather than a marketing extra.
  • File handling is more generous, which matters if you exchange large documents.

The absence of template rules is the difference people notice first and misuse fastest. Fewer platform restrictions do not mean fewer legal ones: consent, unsubscribe and record-keeping obligations under European law apply exactly as they do on any other channel, which is the subject of GDPR and WhatsApp Business: what actually applies.

Telegram is either irrelevant to your business or essential to it. The regional average tells you nothing about which.

How to decide

Do not decide from statistics about your country — the reasoning is the same as in choosing channels market by market. Look at your own last two hundred enquiries and count how many mention Telegram, arrive from a Telegram-heavy market, or come from a community where it is standard. If the answer is under a few per cent, the effort is better spent elsewhere.

If it is higher, the second question is whether those customers are valuable. A channel used by five per cent of enquiries who happen to be your largest accounts is worth supporting; the same five per cent at the bottom of your value range is not.

What adding it costs

The connection itself is the easy part. The real cost is everything around it: another place your team has to check, another set of templates and tone decisions, another identity to reconcile against existing contacts, and another channel where an unanswered message damages you.

That cost is much lower if the channel lands in the same inbox as everything else, and much higher if it becomes another app on someone's phone — which is the same argument made about Instagram in getting ready for Instagram DMs, and it is the whole case for a channel-agnostic system.

Groups and channels change the shape

Where Telegram is genuinely dominant, businesses often use it differently from WhatsApp. A supplier runs a channel that customers subscribe to for stock updates; a trading firm runs a group where clients ask questions in public and everyone reads the answers.

That is a different operating model from one-to-one support, and it comes with different obligations. A public group holds customer conversations visible to other customers, which has consequences for confidentiality, moderation and what your team may say. Decide the rules before opening one, not after the first argument between two members.

The freedom is a trap

Without template approval or a service window, nothing stops you messaging people whenever you like — which is precisely why businesses that arrive from WhatsApp often behave worse on Telegram than they ever did on WhatsApp.

The restraint has to come from you. Apply the same standards you would apply anywhere: message people who asked to hear from you, at a reasonable frequency, with a way to stop. The audience discipline in segmenting your audience for better WhatsApp campaigns applies exactly as written, minus the platform enforcing it for you.

Where it stands today

In be digital ai, WhatsApp is live and Telegram is coming soon. The conversation model, contacts, automations and AI are already channel-agnostic, so adding it is a connection rather than a rebuild.

In the meantime, the useful preparation is to record which customers use it. A custom field noting a preferred channel costs nothing to maintain and answers the question properly when the time comes — rather than leaving you deciding from a regional statistic that may have nothing to do with the people who buy from you.
